â
In the evening, Caleb showed up. Jamie had been induced to wash and take a nap, and Marian was making headway on cleaning and airing the house. Sheâd fed the dogs and built a fire. Caleb came in the kitchen door with two trout in a creel. âMrs. Macqueen,â he said. âTo what do we owe this honor?â
She whispered in case Jamie had woken: âHave you seen him lately? Did you know?â
âYour majesty is upsetââ
âCaleb.â
He set the basket on the table. âIâve had enough already with Gilda. Iâm not hiding bottles from anyone ever again.â
She put a skillet on the stove for the fish. âYou should have told me. How long has he been like this?â
Caleb leaned back against the wall, folding his arms. âIâm not sure. Maybe a month? Before that he was moping around, hung up on that girl, but he was going to school and wasnât drinking, or not as much. He insists heâs working on something important. I donât think heâs really like Wallace or Gilda. I think heâs putting this on a little bit.â
From the other room, a brassy dance tune blared from Wallaceâs gramophone. Jamie appeared in the doorway, a glass in hand. âCold for fishing, isnât it?â
âYou wouldnât eat anything else I could bring.â
âWhere do you even find trout this time of year?â
âThey go deep, but theyâre there.â Caleb took a loaf of bread and a paper bag from his knapsack. âCompliments of Mr. Stanley.â
Looking inside the bag, Jamie said, âHallelujah, he sent cream puffs.â
After theyâd eaten, they settled around the gramophone, Jamie reclining on the floor beside Marianâs chair, Caleb lying on the settee.
âMarian,â Jamie said, breaking through some idle talk about Calebâs hunting, âSarah said she thought Wallace might not have liked that I was making drawings. Do you think that could be true?â
âSarah?â Marian said.
âThe girl in Seattle,â Caleb said.
âBecause I always thought he was encouraging,â Jamie said, âbut when I really think about it now, I wonder if he might have been the opposite.â
âI donât know,â Marian said. She hadnât paid much attention to the dynamic between Wallace and Jamie, had been too preoccupied with flying.
âSarahâs father offered me a job,â Jamie said. âI could have gone to live in Seattle. I could have had a whole life there, but I said no. Do you know why?â
âWhy?â She was afraid the answer would be that he hadnât wanted to leave her alone in Missoula.
âBecause his fortune came from meatpacking.â Jamie laughed, sagged sideways onto one elbow. âOf all things. What luck!â He grew solemn. âI must be a fool.â
In a garbled torrent, he told the story of meeting Sarah in the park, about her mother and sisters, the big house, the art, the topiaries, the seduction of being praised. When heâd reached the ignominious end, he dramatically drained his glass. Brightly, before Marian had gathered her thoughts to speak, he said, âSay, would you dance for me?â He tapped his knee in time with the record.
âWhat?â Marian said.
